Ade Olumoko & African Spirit are the worthy heirs of the Yoruba Apala tradition. The Yoruba are one of the three major groups of people inhabiting present-day Nigeria. Apala music is also called sakara music because of the leading role of the drum of that name (a round hand-drum made from cow or goat-skin tensed on a pottery top, which has the sound of a talking drum). Its influence can be found as far as Haiti, Cuba and Brazil (in the rumba, salsa or samba). Afrobeat music made popular by the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti also has its roots in Apala music. For that matter, this CD was recorded at the Africa Shine in Lagos, Fela’s mythical place now run by his son Femi. This CD is the first part of a three-volume anthology on the traditional music of Nigeria.
