Chilean folk music has been subjected to a strong Spanish influence. To find real Chilean music, one has to go to the small villages on the coast or in the mountains, or in the country. The most typical forms, the cueca and the tonada, are found throughout the country. In the North, one finds the cirillas and the cachimbus, and in the South the pericomas and the lamentos. The Spaniards brought with them new instruments, which the Indians soon adopted. Most of them were stringed instruments: harp, guitar and mandolin.
