Gwo ka is the traditional music of Guadeloupe, a heritage of slavery in the French Antilles. The slaves came from different parts of Africa and spoke different languages, so their only common means of communication was music. Thus gwo ka came into being, as a form of artistic, intellectual, and spiritual expression. The all-female polyphonic and polyrhythmic choir Kalindi Ka, formed in Guadeloupe by women with musical backgrounds that include jazz and opera, brings a note of originality to the interpretation of the old songs of gwo ka.
