The music of the central Indo-Nepalese Himalayan area is essentially a popular art, finding expression in religious singing, celebrations, dancing and also in everyday activities. Singing is a means of expressing one's joy in life, and you hear people singing almost everywhere: women planting out rice in the paddy fields, sherpas in the mountains... In the valleys, rhythm is provided by instruments such as the sarangi (short-necked fiddle), pachima (large double-headed drum of Nepal), flutes and small bells.
