Loubistok ('Love Potion') is a female group comprising of five musicians and singers, conducted by Oksana Melynchuk. It was formed five years ago in Kiev, the most important city in western Ukraine, founded in the thirteenth century, which still has a very rich culture and is home to many music groups, both traditional and classical.

The compositions on this album are basically traditional Ukranian peices, influenced by Russian culture. Pieces full of cheer, sung by voices that are as clear as crystal. Apart from the flute, violin and tambourine, we hear a typically Ukrainian instrument, the bandura. This large psaltery with a fat, oval body and short unfretted neck dates from the Cossack period (sixteenth and seventeenth century); it is often used in the classical repertoire.
