Music and dancing
play an important part in the culture and traditions of the
West Indies. This recording illustrates the Creole spirit through gwo
ka, chouval
bwa, biguine, quadrille, mazurka, and merengue.
The music of the Caribbean is largely a result of the mixture of
African and
European cultures that was brought about by colonization and the slave
trade,
with sounds, rhythms, and instruments of African origin and melodies
that were<
taken to the islands from Europe. Since those times, Creole music has
constantly
grown richer.
The city of St. Pierre on the island of Martinique became the cultural
cradle
of the Lesser Antilles in the 18th century. Bands with a more European
style of
instrumentation (piano, banjo, accordion, clarinet) were formed. The
beguine
was to reach the height of its popularity in Paris during the first
half of the
20th century.
