Long before the Revolution, Santiago de Cuba was famous for its musicians -- Manuel Corona, Sindo Garay and ico Saquito, among others. The music they created, sones, boleros and guarachas, make up traditional trova. Their music is still very much alive in Santiago thanks mainly to a small wood-paneled house, the Casa de la Trova, which opens its doors day in and day out, so that the Santiago public can while away the hours listening to great musicians play a repertoire which, with its combination of understated energy, sensuality and wit, reflects the rhythm of an old port town that is the musical capital of Cuba.
This CD celebrates one of the great musical venues of the world with recordings of ten of the resident bands from the Casa de la Trova, including the legendary Cuarteto Patria, led by the astounding Eliades Ochoa. Notes in Spanish.
