Part of the Music of the Earth CD series.

20 tracks highlight the marimba-based secular and recreational music, as well as the ritualistic and sacred music, of a region largely populated by the direct descendents of the African slave trade. Recorded in Esmeraldas and Buenaventura in 1995, the music on this release moves between up-beat and melodic dance rhythms and haunting call-and-response vocals, accompanied by a single bass drum. 68 minutes. Recorded in the field by Sacha Mirzoeff.
