In Santiago de Cuba the son and the bolero -- among the most important rhythms of the Spanish Caribbean -- are kept alive by more than 40 bands that play daily in this old port town. Of these, the best and most celebrated quartet in Cuba today is Cuarteto Patria. Led by the outstanding Eliades Ochoa -- a substantial contributor to the recent smash Buena Vista Social Club -- they bring their own contemporary flavor to the classic repertoire, which is played, as tradition demands, on two guitars, bongo and bass. Notes in Spanish.

"The overall impact is gentle and nurturing . . . and you can dance to it. . . . Ay, Candela!" --Folk Roots

"So good!" --Village Voice

=========================================

1. El cuarto de Tula (son)
2. Ahora me da pena (bolero-son)
3. Luz que no alumbra (bolero)
4. Diluvino en el Paraná (son)
