The time is the 1950s. The place: the exotic, balmy Mediterranean Sea. Ciganko is an imaginary story of a musician from the south of Italy who starts a voyage around the Mediterranean full of hope and dreams, seeking for his true love. Each song regales us with stories of his different encounters and adventures. He meets people both famous and unknown; the poet Kamov in Yugoslavia; Garcia Lorca in Spain; and various lovers and betrayers. They teach him the different ways of living, the different aspects of life. His journey touches various storied locales around the windswept sunny sea: Greece, Yugoslavia, France, Spain and North Africa. Finally he returns home, only to be murdered by a woman who drowns him because he had learnt that to betray was a part of life...

Francesco Banchini began playing the clarinet at the age of six, and graduated at 20 with the highest honors from the Conservatory of San Pietro a Majello in Naples. Though the clarinet is his first instrument, he performs on a wide variety of wind and percussion instruments, and is an accomplished and expressive vocalist. He is active in live performance all over Europe. Banchini and his band infuse his passionate songs with elements and flavors from numerous musical traditions: classical, medieval, and especially the traditional music of Southern Italy, the Middle East, and the gypsy cultures of Eastern Europe. He has released 14 CDs on French and Italian labels; Ciganko, a new album of all original compositions, marks his American debut on compact disc!
