Amann Rik combines
tradition with modern influences, specializing in Breton music for
reverie and dance. Amann Rik came into being when four musicians from
very different backgrounds got together and discovered a mutual love for
the beautiful, traditional music of Breton. The association of three
influences--traditional, jazz and classical--enabled the group to create
a new acoustic coloring, yet the combined timbres of the bassoon and
the wooden transverse flute call to mind a similar combination, which
has been in use in Brittany for centuries: that of the bombarde (a type
of oboe) and the biniou koz (Breton bagpipe). Breton music went into
decline between the beginning of the twentieth century and the Second
World War, but the trend has been radically reversed since then. Thanks
to the work of collectors, the introduction of federations of musicians
and, more recently, the arrival of many new Breton concert groups, the
collective memory has been saved!
