English fingerstyle guitarist Ian Melrose was raised in
Scotland surrounded by the traditional music of his musician father.
Upon becoming a musician himself, he toured with several folk bands,
including a stint with Celtic superstars Clannad. A SCOTTISH LEGACY
highlights the skill that has long been his trademark - warm, earthy
acoustic guitar brimming with homespun charm. On the album, Melrose
performs a variety of songs with Celtic origins or influences, including
Irish and Scottish traditional songs, marches, jigs, airs, rags and
waltzes. He swaps between the acoustic guitar and the resonator slide
guitar, the latter of which gives some of the songs a subtle country
flavor. Also included are Kerstin Blodig on rhythm guitar and bodhran,
Urs Fuchs on bass and percussion, Peter Jack on fretless bass and Ingolf
Kurkowski on drums and mandolin.
Featuring:

Ian Melrose was born
in Middlesbrough, England, but as a youth
he moved to Scotland. His father is a longtime member of
the Scottish
Fiddle Orchestra, so traditional music was always around!
In 1982
he founded Twlight, an acoustic folk-jazz trio that—thanks
to some unusual arrangements—won the 1985 folk group
competition
at the Edinburgh Folk Festival.
As a founding member of folk-pop bands Be Mine Or Run and
Talking
Water (and as guitarist/arranger with Celtic project Norland
Wind), Melrose has made a name for himself on the
European acoustic
scene with extensive tours of Germany, Holland, Norway,
the U.S.
and Canada, as well as studio jobs for many well-known
artists.
After two critically acclaimed solo albums, Melrose was signed
by Peter Fingers' prestigious guitarist label Acoustic
Music Records,
on which A Scottish Legacy was first released in
Europe to
rave reviews. It is not only Melrose's breathtaking
fingerwork that
impresses his fans, but also his warm, expressive voice.
His guitar
compositions show a strong leaning towards his Celtic
roots, where
elements of Irish and Scottish dance tunes and ballads mix
easily
with South American rhythms and jazz harmonies.
"Bow down--a guitar god is in the house, or at least in the stereo. In a
breathtaking 52 minutes, Ian Melrose graces us with 21
Scottish fiddle tunes played on the acoustic and slide guitars. When
it's all over, we're agog at his virtuosity, but also blessed for
the beauty he's brought us...a marvelous CD filled with spectacular
guitar work." - Rambles
"These tracks create
atmospheric sound pictures with many nuances and display Melrose's
excellent finger style technique. There's
hardly another artist on the acoustic scene who could have produced a
better and more respectful tribute to his homeland." - In
