Traditional songs & instrumental music from the roof of the world. Tibet has enjoyed a high profile in the West over the last few decades and it is not surprising that there are many CDs available in the shops which feature Tibetan music. However, the vast majority of these focus on the sacred music found in the Buddhist monasteries. By contrast, secular music in the traditional styles of the nomads and the urban folk music from Lhasa remains almost unknown in the West having been given little exposure over the years. This recording offers a general introduction to the secular music of Tibet, an interesting and colourful world of music that is still to be discovered.
The singing style is often very wide ranging and decorated and some of the song titles translated are 'Picnic in summertime' from Lhasa, 'The Great Vulture With White Feathers' from Nagchu, 'Love Song' from Central Tibet, 'Five Different Coloured Prayer Flags' from Sertal, 'The Grassland Up There' from Zhigatse, 'Truly in Love' from Kham.
