VALIVANN, from Kerstin Blodig, is a fascinating fusion
of two different cultures - Irish music and Scandinavian traditional
sounds. Both cultures have musical parallels in regards to their rustic
charm and sense of tradition and history, which colors both the melodies
and lyrics. VALIVANN was inspired by the mystery and breathtaking
beauty of the sea, with songs that capture its light and dark aspects.
The romantic Scandinavian ballad "Vallevan" opens the album with a tale
about a lovelorn sailor. The mood turns shadowy with "The Cruel Sister"
and "Harpa," a pair of ghostly airs about jealousy and betrayal. Other
songs include tales of the mystical kelpie, the seal maiden, a lullaby, a
Norwegian poem set to music and more. Each song prominently features
Blodig's enchanting Celtic-tinged singing voice, backed by bodhran,
synthesizers, mandolin, bass and guitar. Norland Wind members Ian
Melrose and Thomas Loefke perform on whistle and harp respectively.
The sea--with its
mysterious depths, vast breadth and breathtaking power--has always
fascinated generations of people and provided inspiration for countless
tales and legends. The North sea connects Norway and Scotland just as
Kerstin Blodig's wonderful solo project links Celtic and Scandinavian
music, creating an exciting Nordic ethno-cocktail!
Kerstin Blodig is one
of the top new vocalists in the German acoustic scene. One of the
principal ideas behind Valivann is to feature the striking
similarity between Celtic and Scandinavian ballads.
