Rock `n' roll and Hollywood have several debts to Mexican country music but perhaps at the top of their list you'd find "La Bamba" a traditional son jarocho which was covered by Trini Lopez, Ritchie Valens and more recently by Los Lobos.
This new CD anthology, the first in a series of releases to feature great masters of the eight different styles of Mexican son, reveals that there is still plenty of life in "La Bamba" and that son jarocho with its furious harps, guitars and high voltage vocals, is the most rhythmic and possibly the most addictive style of Mexican country music. La Iguana brings together the best son jarocho bands -- from the most commercial to the most rootsy -- recorded over 20 years by Corason founder Eduardo Llerenas.
This is an album which should be snapped up by anyone interested in Mexican or Latin music. Son jarocho, like the brow-lifting, lash-fluttering tongue-erecting iguana, is a great country creation, here to stay.
Notes in Spanish.

"The incessant torrent of commercially oriented records currently being released are thankfully being complemented by product that digs to the corazon of the origins of contemporary music . . . worthy of investigation is [this] multi-artist compilation . . . which spotlights son jarocho, a loping, quick-paced rhythm powered by guitar, harp, and African-rooted vocal stylings."
--John Lannert, Billboard
