Cero Farandulero reveals the talent of Los Jubilados - eight veterans of Cuban son and a talented young trumpeter - who with their first CD (recorded in 1998) have reached out to a huge audience of different ages and musical tastes, both in Cuba and abroad.
Los Jubilados were formed by two legendary singers from the musical capital of Santiago de Cuba: Mario Carcasses and Juan Gualberto "Bebeto" Ferrer, who decided to come out of retirement and return to their art. They brought together veteran musicians from different bands as well as Anibal Avila, the virtuoso trumpeter who had first played professionally with Bebeto at the age of 13. Since their formation in 1994 they have won, several times over, Best Sonero Band of Santiago de Cuba, and were recently awarded the prestigious "Premio Especial," Cubadisco '99.
The line-up presents the traditional style of the Cuban sonero septets; Spanish guitar, "tres" guitar, double bass, bongos and conga, hand percussion and trumpet with three lead vocalists bringing the total to nine musicians. What is special about this CD is the apparent ease with which the mature musicians play the son and bolero, offering a calm intensity and a quiet passion that is difficult for younger bands to imitate. Also unique to Los Jubilados is their deep knowledge of repertoire from the Golden Years of Cuban Son due to their membership in the best known orchestra of that time, the Conjunto Cubanero formed in 1937.
Fans of Cuban music, both new and old will revel in the seamless, classic quality of Los Jubilados. Produced by Eduardo Llerenas. Notes in Spanish.
