These 1992 recordings from the coastal area of Java reveal a splendid hybrid created by encountering the culture of the surrounding Sundanese. Featured is Betawi, a theater form whose accompanying ensemble is Sundanese; Tanjidor, a Sundanese repertoire played on European brass instruments, together with gongs and drums; and finally Ajeng, a wild village gamelan quite different from the better known style of central Java.
