Dancers kneel in a row, their arms weaving complex patterns as the tempo quickens. Their graceful, rhythmic movements are accompanied by body percussion and distinctive, chanted melodies. Saman includes cultural background by I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda, the director of the dance ensemble from the Indonesia Consulate of Chicago, and instructional guidance by ethnomusicologist/music educator Bob Walser.

About the Authors
I Gusti Ngurah Kertayuda is an Indonesian dancer, performer and teacher. He is on the staff of the Indonesia Consulate of Chicago

Bob Walser is a folksinger/folklorist, ethnomusicologist, and founder of Folklore in Action. He has been a chanteyman at Mystic Seaport, a performer at international folk festivals, and a folkdance and song leader at numerous music education conferences. He is currently working toward his PhD in ethnomusicology in London, with a focus on the music of Uganda.
