75 years later, the band that first took Cuban son all round the world is thriving in central Havana. At the time it was founded, in 1920, the group's music, son, outraged polite society in Havana, the polyrhythms, the call and response vocals and the spontaneous improvisation, all too rich or too wild for those who preferred the refined, more predictable danzon, danzonette and minuets of the day. The soaring vocals of Manuel Fure ensure that son cubano, at its most passionate, remains one of the great styles of popular music of this century. Notes in Spanish. 11 songs.
