The folk lute of Anatolia called saz or baglama can be considered Turkey's national instrument. Characterized by its pear shape, long neck and six to 26 frets, the instrument has assumed an especially powerful significance as a material representation of the Imam Ali, explained in accompanying notes. Performed by Ali Ekber Cicek, whose career has raised the status of folk music, this recording preserves his Alevi-Bektasi cultural heritage.
