This new collection from the same folks who brought us the fantastic Ethiopiques series presents popular music from the eastern coast of Africa—Tanzania, Lamu, Mombasa, Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and more. The recordings on this collection date from 1968 to 1973, in many ways a transitional period for the country. Musiki wa dansi is generally sweet and laid-back as compared with dance music from neighboring Kenya, possibly an extension of the laid-back Tanzanian life in the ’60s and ’70s. It is built on a bed of guitars and bass, with drums, congas, and other percussion added. A chorus, rather than a single lead voice, usually sings the lyrics, and horn sections of trumpets and saxophones punctuate the vocals.
The third entry in a new series from the creators of Ethiopiques focuses on Tanzania’s sweet, laidback musiki wa dansi style. Extensive twenty-eight-page booklet with liner notes in English and French.

“We’ve been totally digging the always amazing Ethiopiques series, documenting the rich history of Ethiopian music, and it just keeps getting better and better with each volume. You think that would be plenty to keep the folks at Buda Records busy, but apparently not, as they’ve gone ahead and launched a new series entitled Zanzibara, chronicling the Swahili popular music of the East African Coast … lush, moody, swirling, slightly saturnine, and absolutely wonderful.” — Aquarius Records
