A musician with great passion and proficiency, WONG Ching was thirteen when she joined the China Broadcast Chinese Orchestra in Beijing as a Pipa soloist. She studied her instrument with renowned Pipa masters such as WANG Fan-di, WEI Zhong-le and SUN Yu-de. As a result, she has mastered the techniques of different styles and repertoire from different periods. A former recipient of China's Outstanding Performance Award/National Instruments Competition, she has long been acclaimed for her pure tone color and distinctive technique. The pipa is the leading instrument of the Chinese plucked-string musical group. It is a pear-shaped, 4-stringed, lute-like instrument with a common tuning of A,D, E, A. Pipa has 6 wedge-shaped frets as well as 26 smaller bamboo frets that are used for higher positions on the upper strings. “White Snow in Early Spring” demonstrates how the pipa, in the hands of a master, can be fully exploited.
