Johannes Brahms’ glorious 1868 choral masterpiece bears little relation to the traditional Roman Catholic funeral mass. In conjunction with his colleague—theologian and choirmaster Karl Reinthaler—the composer chose moving funeral texts from the Protestant Bible, to create a humanistic “German” requiem.  Inspired in part by the death of his mother, Brahms’ work was premiered Good Friday, 1868 at the Bremen Cathedral. The oratorio initially featured six movements for chorus, solo baritone and symphony orchestra. He later added the sublime “Ihr habt  nun Traurigkeit” for solo soprano and chorus.  The work was recorded at the April 2, 2010 Good Friday performance at the beautiful Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, with the  Vox Ama Deus Ensemble led by Valentin Radu, with Ed Bara, solo bass and Tatyana Galitskaya, soprano.  John Ostendorf, producer  BRAHMS  Ama Deus Ensemble  Valentin Radu, conductor  Tatyana Galitskaya, soprano  Ed Bara, bass
